What if creating content for social media didn’t have to suck?
It can be really hard to make time for what feels like the soul-sucking, time-consuming work of creating content for social media. Especially if you are a multi-tasking entrepreneur + busy mom, squeezing 40 hours of work into under a 25-hour workweek.
I've seen this same sentiment all over the place. Busy moms are struggling to chase social trends to grow their online businesses while also chasing toddlers. It's exhausting and, quite frankly, too much.
Let's be honest; platforms like Instagram and TikTok (I feel like a tech-challenged elder millennial on that one!) haven't been my main source of website traffic (big shoutout to my loyal friend Pinterest for that!). Also, with my ADHD tendencies, I've fallen into the infamous scrolling rabbit hole more times than I care to admit.
Now, if you're a newbie in the online business world, you're probably inundated with messages about the magic of going viral and making big bucks on social media. It's overwhelming, isn't it? The advice seems to be, "Be authentic, but follow all these trends perfectly to succeed." In 2023, it was all about daily reels, and many accounts saw massive growth. I admit, I got pulled into the allure of such success.
But here's the burning question: Does a massive following actually translate to a significant financial impact on your business? And seriously, who has the time to film all those reels?
I gave it a shot, but quickly fell off the bandwagon when it felt like too much to keep up with. If there's one thing those social media "gurus" agree on, it's consistency.
It so happens, 'consistency' is my 2024 mantra.
Then, I stumbled upon the power of B-roll footage – a collection of videos you can use later. But I'll be honest, videos of people pointing at things just didn't resonate with me. Filming felt time-consuming, and it detracted from the work that truly brings in business.
But I refuse to throw in the towel. Creating content should be fun, not a chore!
So, here's the update on my 2024 strategy: I want to post consistently, but I want it to be fun, light, and easy. If it doesn't tick those boxes, it's a no-go! That's my vibe for this year – making things fun, light, and easy.
I won’t be creating content on the daily! I’m going to film a month worth of content in a day, brain-dump all my captions, line them up with what’s going on in my business, make sure I am adding value, and pressing the “schedule” button on my favorite social planner, Later!
Now, here's the exciting part – I decided to team up with my tech-savvy teen daughter for a video shoot. We grabbed some fun props that match the brand, and I splurged on colorful outfits to match the web templates I have in mind. I’m releasing one new template a month and the yellow dress I found that matches the “Wallflower” template the comes out in April is the best thing ever! This is already a happy endeavor!
I've also put together a list of 50 B-roll ideas for filming around the house. These are simple and quick ideas that we could easily shoot in an afternoon. And here's a (semi) pro tip: Turn it into a B-roll party! Include things you love, let your personality shine through, and make it a ton of fun. Creating content doesn't have to be a drag!
Oh, and one more thing – embrace the imperfections. I used to get stuck in the loop of re-filming to get everything "just right." But not anymore!

2024 is all about incredible growth and, most importantly, actually enjoying your life + business. Yes, it's allowed to be fun. If creating content for social media doesn't bring joy and value to your life and business, what's the point?
Let's make 2024 the year we enjoy our entrepreneurial journey!
